Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

Ledley told me not to say the 'Y' Word. So I won't do it.

:king:

After seeing that the drum is banned because of Y word chant, the drum will never come back.

Well, I come from a Jewish family and I maintain that I was raised to treat it as an offensive term. However, so many fans don't see it that way, including some Jewish fans, I don't see it changing anytime soon - especially as I don't think most who say it are even aware of it's connotation or are in any way setting out to offend.

Nonetheless, I can't really disagree with the message of the video. If that puts me in a minority, so be it.

I am Jewish and I do not see it as offensive, a lot of the other chants are worse in my opinion.

Just received this from Bolton #theplotthickens http://bit.ly/J1X6CT <--- Won't they just fuck off?

Interesting, it seems as though Bolton were allowing it, but have now been told not to by Spurs. Surely it's their ground so they can use their own rules? I'd be interested to see the reasoning behind that, if Spurs would tell us.

The reason is due to the rythm the drummer has used in the past encourages the chanting of the word Yid.

As in,

Dum DUm, DUM DUM DUM DUM YIDS

Was that the official reason given by us though? Because I don't remember the club ever saying that, it seems to just be "we can have an atmosphere without a drum" - fair enough in our own stadium if we don't want it but baffling to ban it away as well.

Obviously we know it's because of 'yids' but the club try to hide that, do they not?

I've been in contact with the club about the drum and they have given that very reason. Its all in previous posts...

...so does clapping our hands to the same rhythm... don't tell me they're gonna ban HANDS at Bolton??

Clap, Clap, CLAP CLAP CLAP CLAP - YIDS!! Same diff... we'll sing what we want, we'll sing what we waaaa-aaaa-ant, drum or no drum, we'll sing what we want!

Besides... fucking Chelsea's scum fans hissing gas chambers at us doesn't have a fucking drum in sight... what they gonna ban... tongues? I think 'football' is missing the point somewhat as to what constitutes GENUINE OFFENCE!

If they want to ban an object that causes offence, then try banning Small-Minded-Racist-neo-Nazi-Neanderthal SCUM first, before you worry about a fucking drum!

Really interesting debate, especially when it extends to the commercialisation and general blandness of football support as a whole these days.

Perhaps we need a written petition to go round at the next few games, getting people's names and addresses. Surely if we get into the thousands the club has to listen.

Perhaps we need to make it clear that Tottenham is still OUR club. We may not own it financially and we may not run it day to day. But if not for the supporters, why does a big club like Spurs even exist?

Tere are are 91 other league clubs we could all go and support (90 if you discount the gooners) and could do so at the drop of a hat if we wanted. Imagine if we did that in our thousands? Could the club replace us as quickly as we replace them? Probably not.

Think about it from the clubs point of view.

They have to be seen to be taking actions to stop the use of the word. They cant ban everyone, they cant stop people shouting it en masse, but they can certainly stop a drum banging the rythm that gets everyone chanting it cant they.

I think the drummer is willing to never use that rythm but again, from the clubs point of view, why would they just trust him?

I brought up the fact that paopele bang on the metalwork anyway and they basically said as the metalwork is part of the structure of the stand they cant really do anything about it. Whereas the drum is brought in for the express purpose of creating a certain rhythm and therefore tacitally approved by the Club..

Having said that, they said communications lines are open and trasnparent and although they dont plan to review the matter in the near future, they are aware of approaches being made to the safety officer, members of the boad and the chairman.

On the continent, they have loudspeakers, whole rows of drums, infernos on a stick, unified jumping, scarf swirling and clapping, orchestrated whistling, banners, flags and the passion to sing not only when losing, but they even carry on if the oppo score mid song!!!

At home, we have prawns, whinging and children playing with toys. Yes, I have seen the latter.

But we are in the premier league who are global leaders in fighting racism in football. Apparently.

Genuine question - do any of theose clubs on the continent you refer to use racist language in their chanting? The fact we may not regard the word 'Yid' as recially offensive, is besides the point.

Good point...the continent has a far bigger problem with racist scumbags, but I dont believe for a second that has any relation to being allowed in with flares or drums.

I also think throwing bananas and monkey chanting is a whole other planet from Spurs fans embracing the word "Yid", and actually making it useless as an insult.

We chant it way more than others do at us anymore. Isnt that a good sign?

Thats not really the point when it comes to using the word though is it, we wouldnt dream of singing 'Niger Army' would we?

Of course not, but I think the main controversy here is whether the word Yid is actually as offensive as n###er for example.

I may be very naive on the matter, but I dont get the impression it is as strong, nor does it have the same connotations, and from what Ive heard, alot of Jewish people genuinely dont mind Spurs fans chanting it.

If it causes widespread offence, then yes, it shouldnt be chanted. But has any Jewish community ever complained to the club about it? (Genuine question)

I also find it strange that THFC are quick to try and distance themselves from it (understandable) but they never make any comments about context, and why we chant it.

Have Spurs, or Chelsea ever come right and said "any Chelsea fans making gas chamber hissing sounds will be banned permanently". I think the drive, like many, many anti racism campaigns, puts alot of energy into the wrong areas.

Until a club's fans 'adopts' the word NI**ER to represent themselves, then I don't think there is a case to answer for...

and before anyone says it, West Ham fans singing "I'd rather be a P*KI than a Jew" doesn't really count, now does it?

Haha sorry, I did read the thread at the time it was around but seem to remember it differently to how it is once I just re-read it.

Another thread that's turned into a "yid" debate, what have I started :harryfacepalm:
