Ex-Spurs Player Harry Kane

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

I wouldn't go as far as saying Kane doesn't outright deserve it but Son deserved it more this year as many are pointing out. Spurs fans know because we watched the games. At the end of the day it's an opinion based vote. Footballers who voted I would be surprised if they spent more than a minute on it. It's more likely they voted for their favorite/who have been on highlights that week/reputation/profile etc. I wouldn't think too much of it tbh. It's an award that's kinda nice to win if one cares about that stuff but ultimately it's just a subjective award.

The greatest duo ever. Now time to win a trophy.

The vote also comes from players from teams of lower divisions where the players are predominantly English/British.

Each player gets 2 votes I believe. So if you're English, you're likely going to choose Kane (as the England captain) over Son and another worthy player based on merit alone.

That said, if you're English and voting for Kane, there is little to no chance that your other selection would be another Spurs player.

That said, I think Kane still deserves a nom given we got in the top 4 which is a huge achievement given the circumstances. It really is like winning a trophy all things considered.

So the PL players don't get to vote at all?

So the PL players don't get to vote at all?

How Does Voting For The PFA Players' Player Of The Year Work?

The process is very straightforward.

Players from England's 92 Premier League and Football League clubs each get a vote if they are a PFA member, but cannot choose a teammate.

The nominees announced were simply the six players who had received the most votes.

It is a popularity contest to a large extent, hence Ronaldo's inclusion despite having his worst season in 15 years in terms of goals.

It is also possible that Kane's status as England captain gave him an edge over Son among the predominantly English voters playing in the lowers divisions.

We shouldn't get too fussed about who gets nominated which is a popularity contest more or less I agree. This PFA award has very little merit IMO.

I believe if you are subpar for 19 games, you shouldn't even be nominated. He did deserve it in the previous years for sure not just this year.

Gosh everyone gets so riled up when I say Kane doesn't deserve it THIS year.

Sorry, I thought you said pundits not randos on YouTube who also think that another Englishman should have been in there.

Incidentally, how come Ronaldo is in there?
Mate, it's not difficult to find loads of posts/articles/tweets sharing similar sentiments from pundits that you think are worthy.

You have to remember that the majority of PL players and players in the lower divisions are English. I'd imagine the majority of English players in the PL and lower leagues, put in a vote for at least 1 English player. And most likely that vote went to Kane given his profile as captain and golden boy. And given a voter is unlikely to vote for 2 Spurs players, Son is likely the one that gets shafted.

Ronaldo gets in on reputation alone. I'd imagine a meaningful amount of the younger players (primarily in the lower divisions), whether they be English or not, put in a vote for their idol. Just out of respect for what he's done throughout his career.

It's proving difficult for me. Maybe that's because I couldn't give two shits what is said on Twitter or by randos on YouTube so I don't know which accounts to check for the spicey takes.

Instead I find multiple articles which explain Kane's inclusion because footballers tend to vote for other players that they admire. Seems a lot of players admire Harry Kane...

Which makes you wonder why so few English players win Player of the Year awards...

So what we have here is a picture of footballers being nominated on reputation, not English bias. Sorry the footballers from the football pyramid didn't agree with you.

Say it quietly, but I regularly find myself disagreeing with the Ballon d'Or nominations too, but not being a professional footballer I tend to not make much of a fuss about it.

All valid points but again, I'll put this up once again

English players in English league wins on an award that goes back to 1973 shocker.

A better metric would be to look at the winners of the award since the start of the Premier League in 1992 when the money was there to bring in numerous top players from other countries.

In the 30 years since, an English man has only won it 7 times.
