Transfers January 2022 - Transfer Window

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

We've left the window with a weaker squad than when it opened.

Despite having more FFP slack to work with than any other club following years and years of austerity we failed to address ANY of the glaring deficiencies in our squad, and in the grand scheme of things turned yet another profit rather than investing where it really matters.

Another predictably poor window where the manager was let down and more importantly, the fans were let down
You may see it as weaker but all we've done is rid the squad of 3 players who wouldn't be able to buy a game. Not only that, 3 players who Conte doesn't have to waste time on in training anymore either. As a result, he can give more time to players he does want.
On top of that, 2 of those 3 were rarely ever available to be picked.

Exactly people just want to pile on locelso and ndombele , so they start comparing their goals to a 2nd striker almost. Paulinho would do zero things that a CM would and just run into the box.

You compared Paulinho with Skipp and PEH goal returns. I said he was more akin to Dele.
TND and GLC should be doing a lot, lot better in goal involvements than Skipp and PEH. Not Dele levels but closer to him than those 2.

Having 2 players in every position means sweet fuck all

It's the quality of those players that matters. But hey, we have different opinions on the window and I was just counter balancing yours with mine.

Hopefully yours will prove correct, eh'

Nice to see a civil response, btw, rather than the tantrums shown by some

:dierpochhug:
We weren't going to bring in a multitude of top quality top class players, ever.

Ndombele and GLC cost over £100 mil and they've been pretty shit, we're better off without them.
Dele went on some sort of fee transfer
Gil will be back in the summer, we;ll also have Sarr coming in.

With Conte it;s more to do with players that play his system well, than having individual superstars.

I think Kulu will be a great player for Conte he can play in lots of different positions. Bentancus is also an upgrade on the dead wood that we've flushed out from Conte's squad assessment.

With regards to FFP, it's not real money, it's hypothetical. Joe Lewis doesn't purchase players, THFC has to raise it's own revenue for that. So don't expect any hand outs from Enic or Lewis's personal wealth.

We;ve blown over £100m on Ndomebele and GLC, that;s the problem, the scouts didn;t check them out properly.

Good post, to be fair.

Im sure he wanted them but that doesn't mean they will walk straight into the team. Conte has high demands, he wasn't happy with Eriksen at the beginning for example when he joined Inter.
Erikson has enough about him to change his football to suit what Conte expects. That's just one reason why he's a much better player then either GLC or N'dombele.

When You think small, You can't win Big. Of Course I want to win the League this year. Or at least strive for it. Your mentality is exactly why Spurs is sitting where we are. 6/10 is Good Enough for you? But I understand. You ask for what more I wanted this window? What about any of the following, 'CF, CM, and even RWB'. No where have I seen that exact words....... Oh it was under the need section in your comments. I can understand being a supporter, but blindly supporting makes me wonder.

There is a difference between striving for the best and being unrealistic. Thinking Spurs have any shot at winning the league this year, even if we had filled in the gaps that we needed to is sheer lunacy. No wonder you’re so down on Spurs if that’s the target you’re setting and refuse to accept anything less.

How am I, or anyone else for that matter blindly supporting the club when it’s been called out numerous times how perplexing it is that none of our areas of concern were addressed, or more concerning there weren’t any major links to any of those positions. It still doesn’t take away from the fact that we did sign two player who we may not have needed, but may still improve the squad.
How is it that even though I called out those concerns I’m still considered to be blindly supporting the decisions of the club.
Is the scale for “blindly supporting spurs” just binary, where only saying “FUCK LEVY THE CUNT, ENIC OUT” is considered blind support? It can’t be because I’ve seen you argue about the state of this window with members who are firmly in the ENIC OUT camp.

I do hope that seeing as you feel so strongly about these issues that you were at the protest on Monday. If you were then massive respect, and I genuinely do mean it. But if on the other hand all you do is piss and moan about how unhappy you are about the club then your mentality is just as much to blame as mine

I watched Diaz last night for Colombia, Liverpool must have bought him as a Mane back up/replacement. To be honest he didn't look anywhere near as good as Mane and I don't see how he would have got ahead of Son for us.

So still Levy haggling over a penny right?

Nope. It was down the agents involved. We actually had the price agreed so doesn't play into that agenda this time I am afraid.

From the Athletic:

The closest and most significant of the latter was Luis Diaz, whom The Athleticcan reveal Tottenham had a signed agreement in place with Porto for him to join. The deal was believed to be for €45 million (£37.6 million) plus €15 million (£12.5 million) in add-ons, with terms also agreed with Diaz himself.

However, Diaz being away on international duty meant that the agreement wasn’t yet signed by the time it was essentially thought to have been vetoed by his Colombian agent. The representative in question is said by sources to have objected when it became apparent that Jorge Mendes had the mandate from Porto to oversee the Tottenham move. Liverpool, who were not using Mendes as an intermediary, pounced and agreed a deal at more or less the same price. The Athletic has contacted the Colombian agent for comment.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy, who did everything he could to pull off the deal, was raging at the turn of events. Diaz had been enthusiastic at the prospect of joining Spurs, and some believe it would have been a better move for him given the stage of his career, but ultimately, he too was seduced by the prospect of Champions League football and working with Jurgen Klopp. Sources have indicated that Barcelona were also in for the winger and prepared to pay €5 million (£4.2 million) upfront followed by €50 million (£41.8 million) in the summer.

1: We can't win the league this year, don't be abursd. You can argue that almost 3 years on from the CL final that we should have gotten ourselves in a position to be a genuine contender, yes. That's on Levy and ENIC. 100%. No argument from me, it's frustrating how far we've fallen off. But there was no sense whatsoever in expecting the January window to provide a title-challenging overhaul when we're so far behind.

2: It's all relative. 6/10 is a better window than all our Top 4 rivals. All of them. It's not good enough in a vacuum, but in context, it's been fine.

I am frustrated how far we've fallen. I'm frustrated we did poor business in the summer and wasted time hiring and persisting with Nuno. Who knows how much better things would have been if we just appointed Conte to begin with? We don't know. There's little point getting hung up on it now.

There were multiple objectives this January: get out the deadwood, bring in players Conte specifically can work with. Getting deals for Lo Celso, Ndomele and Dele would have been time consuming. Getting the two players we got in would have been time consuing. We were a whisker away from Diaz, but for once it failed because of external factors (that external factor being Liverpool). Traore went to Barca because he wanted to. This is all squeezed into a window which is difficult for everyone.

Going into the summer is when crunchtime is. Conte and Paratici working together with a proper preseason and full summer window for the first time. You could say the Paratici signs are worrying because last summer the players he got in have either not performed or aren't ready for the Premier League. But I'm willing to give the benefit of the doubt for now because now he's working with a genuine top class coach in Conte. We should also be able to clear the decks further with Lo Celso and Ndombele finding permanent moves which makes more space for better replacements.

I'd love Joe Lewis\ENIC to decide to go mental and throw buckets of their own cash in, but that's not how they operate. I'd love Levy to go a bit more risky and splash the cash but that would be against his nature as he's built the club up to only spend what it brings in. I personally think a small amount of speculate to accumalate is in order given the amount of cash CL football will bring in, but again it's not how he operates. He's seen how Leeds did that and ended up outside the PL for years. Maybe he's too cautious, I can't change this though. Me complaining on a forum won't change diddly squat. Spurs haven't dropped down the league because of fans, if you really really blame ENIC and Levy then you're letting them off the hook by putting the blame on fans who put their cash in.

Maybe new ownership is the change we need, maybe we need someone in to drag us over that line, but again they're not going to sell cheap because some guys on TFC are kicking off. Someone needs to want to buy Spurs. And we're not Newcastle, someone can't come in withg a piddly £250m and buy us, we're on a different level to Newcastle, there are very few people or companies who could step in.

So yeah, I'm frustrated we keep getting so close while other teams around us get to celebrate trophies. I'm irritated pissy little clubs like Man City win so many trophies now when they were a joke when I was growing up. But there are things I accept I cannot change. This doesn't make me believe Levy is the greatest chairman in the world or an ENIC lover or any other purile insult you wish to throw at me. I'm just a season ticket holder with the power to change very little. I could refuse to renew next season, but no. I won't. I never thought I'd be in a position to be a ST holder at Spurs. I refuse to give that up.

Some things are shit. Some things are ok. I'm Spurs and I'm here for the ride.

Unless all the paperwork was signed this is meaningless. And we know its wasn't signed.
Willian was much, much further down the line than this deal before we got embarrassed.

It's interesting that Spurs are upset that news of the deal got out which they believe alerted Liverpool. But that's interesting only because it shows worrying naivity from Spurs at how these things happen. They must have known there was serious Liverpool interest. For me, if the conversion didn't start with "if Liverpool come back now, will you turn them down?" then Spurs need to get their act together.
Anything other than a firm yes to that question and I'd have walked away and saved the embarrassment of it leaking out and us looking like failures yet again.

It's the general mood on the internet nowadays. Polarised with no empathy for the opposing views.

For example, Spurs Twitter has turned even worse than ever before this transfer window. It's an innavigable sea of shit that has just got deeper and stronger. So much hate, anger and shit spouted off by the second. It is then brought in here. People need to reassess their use of it I think and also chill the fuck out.
