Ex-Spurs Player Matt Doherty

Latest Spurs videos from Sky Sports

It wasn't until he hired Conte that he put in what can be described as a decent performance, 1.5yrs after we signed him!! And they numbered no more than approx 5 games!! This is the very definition of shit. We've been trying to offload him, not a single sniff. He's 31yrs old, his contract is not up until Aug 2024, and he's almost worthless (through amortisation we've written off approx £8,125,000 so he stands us in at just under £5m, which means we couldn't even get Atleti to pay that for him!!!). This is good by the club, be ruthless and don't let dross like him be a millstone around our necks, because not getting rid means we won't bring in any new.
I agree with all of this except the outcome is that we are lumbered with Sess and Royal. Doherty whilst not amazing has had his moments in attack and better delivery than both. Would much rather him as cover for Porro and Perisic

the people moaning about us dropping Doherty need to get a fucking grip, lighten up, stop being a miserable twat.

I saw a post on Insta that called the dropping of Doherty ‘disgraceful’ and it received almost 200 likes! What the actual f*** is going through some peoples heads?!

I think it’s partly to do with young people losing a grip over the English language, do they understand that ‘disgrace’ is an extreme word?? Is their vocabulary so limited that everything must be communicated in extremes? Or is it because extreme language gets interactions? Either way it’s really annoying.
Hyperbole, it’s way overrated!

Matt Doherty says it was a 'no-brainer' for him to leave Tottenham and join Atletico Madrid in shock deadline-day switch... as the Irish defender insists it was 'impossible' for him to turn down the chance to play for the Spanish giants

Matt Doherty has admitted that he did not need convincing to join Atletico Madrid following his shock exit from Tottenham on deadline day.
With Spurs closing in on signing Pedro Porro, news came through that Doherty was set to exit the club to join Atletico on loan until the end of the season.
However, Tottenham had already loaned out their maximum number of players and this led to Doherty's contract being mutually terminated as he arrived at Atletico on a free transfer.

Doherty has admitted it was a whirlwind 24 hours, but is happy to be in the Spanish capital after bringing his two-and-a-half year stay at Tottenham to an end.

'For me, it was kind of a no-brainer once the opportunity came and I had to take it with both hands. It's an absolute pleasure to be here,' Doherty told the Spanish press as he was unveiled as an Atletico player on Wednesday afternoon.

'I never imagined at the time something like this would be able to happen. Back in time when I was doing everything my dream initially was to play in the Premier League. I fulfilled that dream.

'But opportunities come that are unexpected at times, and this was an opportunity I saw that if I made the move I could better myself as a person exploring different cultures and different football. Like I said before, once the opportunity came it was impossible for me to give it up.'

Doherty has signed a deal that runs until the end of the season, but has revealed that he is open to extending his contract if he can hit the ground running in the Spanish capital.

'I am here until the end of the season, but that doesn't have to be the end. That will be up to me and I will try to perform well and see where it takes me,' he added.

'Initially now it is only for six months, but let's see if I can continue to do well for the club and see what happens going forward.'

Doherty found it difficult to hold down a starting spot at Tottenham in the first part of the season, and looked rusty at times after an injury lay-off at the end of last season.

The 31-year-old has insisted that he is ready to go straight into the team, though, and is looking forward to proving his worth to 'world-class' manager Diego Simeone.

'For me it is an opportunity to improve myself and work under another world-class manager, I've been fortunate enough where I have been able to do that through my career,' Doherty said.

'As you know he [Simeone] doesn't speak a lot of English, so my message to him was I'm here, I'm fit, I'm strong and I'm ready to play. I can play for him on the left, I can play for him on the right or through the middle.

'Wherever he needs me, whether I play five minutes or 90 minutes, he knows that I won't stop running and working as hard as possible for him, the club and my team-mates.'

Emerson is just better than Doherty (hence why he gets selected time and time again over him). He's a significantly better defender and contributes more down the entire flank enabling us better balance. Doherty was marginally better than Emerson higher up the pitch, but really there's not a great deal in it, especially considering Royal has the legs to get back when our attacks break down. We can and perhaps should upgrade him but he'll have a say in this season as Porro's backup (we are still in a good position to challenge for 4th, still in FA Cup and in CL), he has an understanding of what Conte requires of the position.

None of this makes Emerson top-draw but he's only 23yrs old (the same age as Tanganga!!) so he can still be coached and more importantly, there's resale value too might have to wait a further year for that value to become realistic i.e he'll have a book value of £15m then.

Sess is poor in most aspects of the pitch (neither good at defending nor in attack), but he's only 22 and has been with us 3 seasons of a 5-year contract, so making him worth £10m on our books. This should mean he's very saleable and I don't think his salary of £60kpw(??) puts him out of reach of most PL clubs either.

Doc was crap.

what a load of nonsense lol.

you're the one that was posting kicking stats for lloris and thinking that made him good with his feet. so its expected i suppose. here is some proper stats for ya, ones that actually matter and cant be twisted.

leeds 4-0... doc goal and assist

march 7th
everton 5-0.... doc 2 assists

brighton 2-0

20th march
west ham 3-1

3rd april
newcastle 5-1..doc goal

aston villa 4-0...the game he gets taken out

next two games, lose to brighton and draw to brentford! so in contes BEST ever run of form doc started every game! losing 1 and winning 6. 25-5 on agg over 7 games.... he was a massive reason for this. so how the fuck can you watch games and think emerson is a better player? emerson will never be RWB for a team on that sort of form.

Happy he got a move that will hopefully end well for him. He provided some bright moments and certainly recently was the best option we had in my mind, but he just never could get out of the shadow of the mythical right back everyone would have rather had. Always just felt like a placeholder. Despite that, he never missed a shift.

Hope Atleti turns out nice for him. Wasn't such a bad move for the last right back we pushed onto them.

I am quite sick of what I see from some fans here, tbh.

I am not saying that Doc would have been among best players for Spurs. Nor that it was all-in-all a successful transfer. Nor that he should have been a starting player for us.

But some of the comments are really freaking off-the mark.

1) Labelling him as deadwood/useless, whatever - I get that we signed Porro, but I'd like to remind you - he has not played a single minute for us yet. I really hope he hits the ground running. But there is always risk with incoming player from different league.
2) We are one bad tackle away from only having Emerson Royal to play as RWB. And this is thoroughly proven - he has no ability to support the attack and this season he has been poor on defensive side as well. Hardworking Kulu playing in front of him helps to mask it fortunately.
3) On the other side - we are Perisic knock away from Sess being the only option to start the game. We saw his performance against Preston - he really fucking poor at crossing and creating chances. Quite honestly, I'd rather have Doherty on than either Sess or Royal.
4) Any freaking way you look at it - it is poor use of resource. It is true - we might not have got much for selling him. And that he might not want to join likes of Everton, Nottingham, Bournemouth etc. But still, terminating the contract at the last hour indicates total panic and inability to plan ahead. Talking about "but we saved salaries" - like fuck we did. Club had to find solution and pretty sure that most of the remaining salaries were paid out to Matt. So we received fuck all, lost depth player that is better than current ones and still paid salaries. It is shit move from any angle to look it from.

Doherty was one if the worst players i have ever seen in a Spurs shirt. The club offload him saving £80k a week in wages and replace him with a top quality player and we are still not happy.

What the fuck has happened to our fanbase.

Only that the player who was left into the side is worse than the one we released.

Doherty did not set the world on fire, but he had more footballing brain than Royal. And was better than Royal and Sess.

The fact that the player left by mutual consent means we don't have to pay off the remainder of his contract.

This is a great deal for the club and the player.

In what kind of world are you living in ?

Mutual agreement = both sides agreed. That is all it says.
Club had given contractual obligation to pay him 3,4 m£ per season. He had 1,5 to receive so 5,1 million pounds or 5,7 mil EUR.
What makes you think that Doherty just said, "ah, okay, you know, you can keep your 6 million euros, I'm good!"???

It meant that both sides agreed and most likely compromize was found somewhere in the middle. Not that he just gifted the 6 mil.

He's not that shit that we write off 15m or whatever he was worth... Odd one
How on earth do you value him at £15m!!!??? We paid £13m for him 2.5yrs ago!! He was worse for us than he was at Wolves. A genuinely awful player to watch, it wasn't until Conte came in did he turned in any performances considered "good" and this was just a short run of approx 5 games post-Christmas last year then he got injured at Villa. Came back this season and has been shit.

So, £13m across a 4yr contract means his book value at Spurs is approx £4.8m. We terminated his contract ergo wrote off £4.8m so we could get his wages off our books to bring in a better player. In fact, the wages he earns at Spurs costs us more than he stands us in on our books (£5.1m), we've saved ourselves £300k by cancelling his contract

He's 31yrs old. A declining asset. Shit enough for other Clubs to not want to pay even £5m for him.

If you want to take a personal swipe at someone at least make sure you get it right. I've never said Hugo is good with his feet, in fact quite the opposite, on this site at least I think I was the first to point out how poor he was with his feet (not long after we bought him), needless to say, I copped a lot of shit for that but nearly 10yrs latter we are where we are now!!!! So please do fuck off.

The rest of your response simply isn't worth my time in responding to other than to say Doc is sold, but Emerson isn't. Emerson is/was Conte's preferred option BECAUSE HE SELECTED HIM TO PLAY MORE GAMES. Unless of cause, you believe that Conte is actually still secretly on the payroll of Chavs and is deliberately selecting the worse player so we (he) lose.
