Tottenham Hotspur Football Club can press ahead with plans to build a new stadium after a protracted Compulsory Purchase Order (CPO) was finally pushed through.

The White Hart Lane club this evening reported the Department for Communities and Local Government (DCLG) confirmed the CPO made by Haringey Council in respect of the remaining land required for the Northumberland Development Project has been approved.

The club released a statement saying: "This is a very significant step in the CPO process.

"The club has used the intervening period productively and has refined detailed design of the stadium in order to ensure it is future-proofed and optimised.

"We shall provide our supporters with a further update and timeline on the Northumberland Development Project as soon as we are able to do so."

Last month the Haringey Independent reported that Tottenham MP David Lammy had accused the Government of taking “too long” to make a decision crucial to the Spurs stadium development.

In response to a written question from Mr Lammy in Parliament on Monday, the Department of Communities and Local Government revealed the average length of time for a decision to be reached on whether to grant councils permission to issue a CPO is ten to 11 weeks.

Haringey Council applied to the department for the CPO in September 2012.

Mr Lammy said: “This decision has now gone on for too long, and we can see from these answers, how much longer this CPO is taking compared to most applications.

“Secretary of State Eric Pickles has said he will be reaching a decision shortly. If he does not, I will raise this issue with the Prime Minister directly.”

In the Department for Communities and Local Government's response, Nick Boles MP, parliamentary under-secretary for planning, said the case was “complex”, and that further views of interested parties had been sought.

He added: “We hope to issue the decision on this shortly. It is not appropriate to comment further as to do so may prejudice the Secretary of State’s decision.”

The time it's taking to get the project up and running is unsurprising. There's always new buildings going up where I live and most of the projects have taken donkey's years to actually start digging. You see the site sectioned off and boards go up with a picture of what the new building will look like, then up to a decade later, and several re-designs and re-submitted applications for planning permission, eventually you see some digging starts to happen and everything speeds up a little bit. Can't see any point being angry that the same is happening with our stadium. It's not exactly a simple process.

I remember the ruskin square development (next to east croydon) was supposed to start 15 years ago.

Ive always believed that the plan when ENIC took over was to move us into the planned athletics stadium at picketts lock..they took over early 2001, it was going to be a 50k stadium and was a mile or so up the road. The government pulled out of the athletics thing october 2001. I think thats why he got interested in stratford, colossal fuck up that the whole thing was. that might have put us back by a few years, but who knows..we may never have got planning permission without the deals to pull out of the olympic stadium legal challenges and the riots. (the riots in croydon at the same time certainly helped with the whitgift centre development)

I'm sure somewhere further back in this thread someone mentions the fact that Pickles is a gooner... which of course must have nothing to do with our CPO decision taking so damn long!

"Prime Minister, forget the wars in Iraq, Syria, Ukraine, don't worry about Ebola, the vote on Scottish independence will sort itself out - I have something which needs your attention far more urgently."

It's all done. Archway have packed up.

If true, they were very poorly advised through all of this.

The CPO will be a fraction of what Levy would have offered, they massively overplayed their hand and now they get pretty much fuck all - basically just the open market value of the property........which for an industrial unit in Tottenham isn't a lot.

Sad thing is the trouble in the Middle East is probably easier to solve than the plethora of bullshit and palm greasing in getting the stadium ready!!

I heard they settled a while back and they did ok.
