Hes getting a lot of heat lately and some of it is a tad unfair i think.

He did the most defensive actions by any midfielder yesterday for both teams and had the highest pass accuracy at 97%. Had a mere when conceding the penalty but he was far from our worst player.

Think hes the new scapegoat

I've gone off him a bit. Pre Cash tackle I really liked him.

Now he looks sluggish and there's very little incision with his passing

It's all just safe and pedestrian, barely notice he's on the pitch.

Looks and feels like another player who's happy to coast along at Tottenham Hotspur.

its no coincidence that everytime he starts in games where we need to show some football, we look shite. hes not good enough on the ball, and hes not good enough off the ball either as last nights ridiculous lunge in the box showed.

people have this misconception of him that hes good on the ball, hes anything but. hes quite similar to winks on the ball, hell actually bring pressure onto us by him having the ball.

time for gray.

yea the front line is shit and the midfield are always going to struggle when you got 3 stinkers in front of you, but bentancur is a poor player and is now a weak link.
I just can't get over how unambitious his passing is. Does anyone really ever remember him making some progressive incisive passes?

He always plays it safe, side ways and backwards.

Like you say, he isn't good off the ball and he cartainly isn't good on it.

At least JP is excellent off the ball and also has a goal in him etc

Hahaha, guys, you might not believe it.

But after Villareal game (17th September) Facebook post SpursFanzone made a post admiring Bentancur. Let me bring some highlights of it -
"It's like watching prime Sergio Busquets. Poetry in motion."
"Always getting away from pressure and danger with his skills. Love how he slows everything no matter how the opposition are pressing"
"Rodrigo Bentancur is the closest player since Mousa Dembele to absolutely impact the game without getting credits because he doesn't score or assist"

YES. Really.
Some people (who I assume have watched more than 1 game of football) really wrote this.

Obviously (having more than 2 functioning braincells and 2 minutes to kill) I replied back then as well that, come on, Bentancur is 10x closer to Oliver Skipp and Harry Winks than he ever will be to Dembele and Busquets.

I'm just wondering how Busquetsesque was his incredible performance against Bodo/Glimt yesterday :D :D :D ?!?!

Well, I think it is combination of things.

- him being the only really experienced midfielder out there yesterday; I personally hold more experienced players more accountable than fairly young players
- his + Palhinha duo in CM having been symbol of our too conservative approach for number of games now

Also I don't care too much about his pass accuracy on it's own. I tried to watch him extra closely yesterday - most of his passes were one-touch-passes back to CB or fullback. What I think many would like to see (against such opposition at least) would be to - control the ball to adjust the tempo and then pass it / cross if forward. I did not really see that from him yesterday.

IN BIG PICTURE - I agree, he wasn't our worst player. Nor was he sole reason why we played so poorly. Nor do I think we should release/sell him right away. Just I think that much more was expected from him yesterday (and this season generally).

He’s an ok 4th midfielder.

Problem is, he doesn’t pair well with palhinha at all, so we struggle he’s at the 8.

Sarr is far better at the 8. Probably Bergvall too.

Palhinha is better at the 6.

So no matter where he plays, there’s a drop off. His best attribute is versatility, but he’s not great at any position.

Are we still guilty of clinging onto 2022 Bentancur not realising it's been 2 full seasons since he was a solid first team player

It's been some time now since I saw him look like he was a MOTM candidate, and he's now been overtaken by the kids for his place IMO

Don't get me wrong It will be good to upgrade but I don't think we have it in squad right now, one of the younger CMs in squad might overtake him.

But its interesting you mentioned Sarr I thought he was completely non existant yesterday and has been poor overall since man city game in my opinion, though he has had a bit of injury issue and had a couple of good moments like goal vs Spam and a nice lay off for Palhinha goal vs Wolves.

I'm just gonna call a spade and spade here. I think he's toilet.
Even before the ACL i think he's vastly overrated but just looked like a good player in a team that had to suffer skipp, winks, hojbjerg and sissoko for sometime previous

He's slow, he hides in midfield, his movement is bad. He doesn't have a great pass, nor a shot, nor a cross, nor a tackle .
All he had was being a good at getting out of a press and laying off the ball through close control and that's deserted him for a long time now.

Giving him another contract is just another in the long line of holding onto the like of Davies, winks, richarlison, hojbjerg etc way longer than we should.

Was saying it all summer, midfield. That's what needs upgraded more than anything. It's better to dominate with a great midfield and have shit forwards like Woolwich rather than have a shit midfield and great forwards like conte era and pray Kane or son pull u out of the fire.

Relying on a trio of inconsistent kids is diabloical, and was partially responsible for ange's bad form

They clung to nurse....for fear of worse. Correct , apart from Ange :Xavi inesta Messi couldn't fix that junk he's peddling as Elliott and Gibbs-White good players will soon show.

He’s bang average but we’ve become so accustomed to our poor midfield we overrate all of them

The fact an ex-West Ham player has walked in and looked one of our best players is very alarming

He’s meh. He’s always been meh. Him and Kulu were a dynamic duo of bargain basement opportunistic signings from a club who wanted rid. They worked well short term as a boost but were never going to be top calibre long term.

This type of signing has become far too common at this club. Easy to sign, not too much on the wage, very little competition. Not everyone who ticks these boxes is bad but we rely on that type of transfer too much.

Unfortunately Bentancur is one of our biggest shortcomings (other than our limited forward line) - he occupies an absolutely key position but rarely (if ever?) does he do anything clever to put someone else in space or to create uncertainty in the opposition's minds.

Nor (from what I can tell) does he continually stretch himself physically to make himself available to receive passes from others, as competent midfielders do.

How many searching kicks into the box has he managed this season?
