Greasie, can you explain why you think a defensive pairing that was very successful in the Erividisie will be a problem in the EPL?
Dixie, does that really need an answer. The Prem is nowt like the Dutch Lge.

Just watch Fellaini bully us at Old Trafford, just watch Benteke and others cause us grief with either pace or power or both. Leicester had us on toast, would Toby be enough to turn that sort of embarrassment around ....

Greaves357_bestever Greaves357_bestever has me on ignore! Fucking YES! I consider myself lucky there.
:freundgoal::freundgoal::freundgoal::freundgoal:

Can't take a man seriously if his opinion is that Toby and Verts won't work well together (when it's blatantly obvious that they could fit together nicely.

Hi TJ, first off thanks for the kind support. I have CG on ignore, so have nothing to say to him BTW.

Re Jan and Toby. AFAIK neither is good in the air, always a problem when your defence is aerially vulnerable. Also, AFAIK, neither is particularly quick, always a problem, especially if we're playing that dumb high line again.

Moreover, time and again Jan is outbattled phyiscally, and I'm not sure TA is going to be the physical powerhouse that could help there.

For me one or more of Wimmer Fazio or Dier is likely to prove a better partner for Toby, and indeed for Jan, but I think we all know who will be the 'first choice' pairing.

We needed a striker far more than another CB, though in the long run Toby could be a good buy.

With the way the Premiership is going, I don't think their Aerial ability will be too big a problem. They can both compete with the likes of Costa in the air fairly well so I don't see it being a huge issue.

Neither of them are rapid, but they are easily quick enough for what is being asked of them. And I don't think they need to be physical monsters.

But, I do agree, we don't need two ball playing defenders on the pitch at the same time, which is in essence what they are.

I will be flabbergasted if we don't replace Soldado and/ or Adebayor. Levy and ENIC would have committed an unthinkable malfeasance. But I think it'd be wise to hold off on ripping them apart for that until the window closes. Chances are we are going to have a new striker or two.

Vertonghen and Alderwiereld would be a good CB partnership, no matter what greaves says.

We do need a striker though, and I think we'll get one. No need to be so uptight about it. Plenty of time left in this window.

I read today the Scum haven't made any offer for MS so maybe Wenger doesn't fancy him?

:dawsonmean:
I think Wenger may decide to stick with young Coquelin, and have already extended Arteta's contract for another season(?)
They could just make one big signing, a striker. I reckon either Cavani, Higuain or Benzema. They have already signed a replacement CB and now have 2 decent keepers.
It wouldn't surprise me if they stay with Coquelin but it wouldn't surprise me either if they bought Schneiderlin as he would definitely play more.

Fair comments TJ.

I've given my views, so won't repeat them. Let's see how they get on at OT, and take it from there. They'll probably look quite good in the Audi Cup BTW, but that ain't English football.

Completely disagree. I don't think there is a major difference in the leagues other than a little class. Styles are very similar. However, the key to any good CB partnership is understanding and familiarity. These guys have and can bring it to our shaky defence. I think if anything it is more positive because it will also be favourable with Hugo. Verts doesn't mind putting a foot in and with another CB alongside him he is confident in, it can only be positive IMO.
