Another poor performance tonight, but I'll reserve my judgment for the end of the season. Definitely feels like we overspent on this lad though.

Would have loved a Bakayoko-type explosive winger to really stretch defences. Dribbly-boi Nusa will be a big step in that direction.
Yup. This club’s obsession with “versatility across the front line” will be the death of us. We need specialists, with an opposite strong foot of the wing they play on. There is a reason that any of the best teams you can think of in recent history have all had these types of wingers.

We were shocking in possession tonight, but especially on the right side. Having a right footed RW there when we’re asking the wingers to drop deep to help get us up the pitch just isn’t beneficial to us. Combine that with an excellent pressing City team, it was a disaster.

It’s not surprising that when left-footed kulu was moved there, we looked a little better, as he naturally had better angles to work with.

And out of possession, it isn’t even a contest. It’s embarrassing how little Brennan does defensively, compared to Kulu at least

Agree. 1-2 players in the squad is a nice to have (e.g. Werner) for depth. Brennan's shown flashes of promise (a couple of good assists) but I'm not entirely sure what he contributes in this system.

Admittedly I'm a sucker for more "traditional" wingers with energy to burn down the flank. We've seen how well we can play with fullbacks on the overlap, taking the ball to the byline with runners from deep flooding the box. More of that.

said it a lot of times about this lad, just not brave enough, last night we could see just doesn't think quick enough as well
that chance he had last night when he run in the right side of penalty box he should have gone round the keeper (hoping that the keeper would take him down) instead he trys to chip him from a foot away

Suffice to say, all of us want Johnson to be him. Can't ignore the concerning flaws in his current game, but it's just a waiting game now to see how he progresses for the rest of this season and into the next.

He won't have many more chances. He doesn't make the starting 11 when Sonny and Maddison come back. Even Werner is ahead of him in the pecking order if we need someone to change the game from the bench.

I know the Werner loan happened after we got Johnson, but I'm not sure Ange benches him in that way given the money we've plonked on him and that it was allegedly an Ange buy.

In any case, we'll have to see what Ange is going to do, as it wouldn't surprise me if he benches Richy for Sonny in the middle, and persist with Deki and Johnson as the wingers. They've all blown hot and cold of late so it's difficult to say who should get the start. In Ange we will trust, I guess.

No chance he benches Richarlison. He's been the most consistent attacker for us since the festive period. It would send a terrible message if he ended up being benched. Ange has shown to pick players based on meritocracy so far.

My biggest issue is that he doesn’t work hard enough or press with any intensity at any point in the game. Look at the city players early on going after us. They stopped us getting into our rhythm and that sets the tone. He will have moments when he produces but first and foremost he must work fucking hard. Richy is the prime example where he gets the benefit of the doubt because he works hard and his deficiencies can be forgiven at times. Richy will never be a great player but he works. Johnson will never be great player but doesn’t. He won’t progress if he doesn’t and will end up standing still or drop down the levels.

I understand that, but think we’ll have to see. Richy needs service for his direct style of play and I don’t know if Sonny on the left and Deki on the right will deliver the necessary combination. Maybe Ange will start with that but if it doesn’t work, I can see him subbing Werner and Johnson in for the flanks and take either Sonny or Richy out.

If you're going to be lazy off the ball you need to be fucking good on it. So he needs to either start fucking producing on the ball or start working harder off of it.

Yeah, this tells me he picks his battles.

Towards the bottom of the scale for attempted duels per 90 but the top end of success %age wise.

You could argue that's either smart, or lily livered. How many does he just not attempt? Would it be better to get stuck in and win twice as many, but drop the win ratio by 30%, or does standing off on 50/50's mean that he's in a better defensive position and therefore the oppo are less likely to launch a quick counter than if he dives in and loses out?
He’s gutless, pure and simple.
