With the talent we have, we should be winning this tournament.....but guess what......

Probably, and we probably won’t. But the outdated notion we won’t get out the groups or that we lack talent is just so boring to still read in 2024.

The ‘English players only do well when foreigners are playing with them’ crap is the absolute worst as well.

Shaw was in the Euro 2020 team of the tournament and deservedly so, he is when fit one of the best left back in the prem and a top class player. It’s simply that he is often injured or in the past overweight.

If Shaw is fit we have an elite left back but if is the key word.

The problem is waistcoat...

Shaw won't even play in the group stages........... Ignoring this fact won't make it go away.

I'm sceptical he will be match fit enough to play a minute. If he doesnt feature tonight, how can he be expected to do anything in a major tournament. We always seem to do this (take an injured player) and never learn from it.

This is a little different imo. We are not leaving out anyone who we really need. The guy we are taking isn't the one big hope (Beckham/Rooney) but the only decent option in his position, backup is expected to play but a bonus to have an option of a traditional LB.

We definitely should've brought Mitchell, again if only as a tactical option to at least provide an overlapping presence in games if Shaw isn't fit. He's not great but he knows that role and he was the only fit player we had to perform it.

Elite is a strong word. He's a very good left back on his day. Which is few and far between.

He wasn't in the team of the tournament either. Spinazolla was the left back.

Then again, Hojberg and Lukaku made it. As we know, you can't judge a footballer on a tournament.

Gary did the same thing at the WC with Maguire.......... That time it paid off (to a degree).

This time we have Stones, Shaw & Geuhi all precarious in terms of their fitness........ That's 3 of our best back 4.

Why are you acting like Luke Shaw was some tournament flash in the pan and like he isn't the two-time United player of the season and wasn't in the league's team of the season on two separate occasions as well as having been considered a huge talent since he was a teenager?

The guy is obviously a good footballer, he's just an injury prone one. When he actually has spells of playing he almost always does well, because he's erm ... good. That tournament wasn't a fluke, he's just actually a really good left back.

England team for tonight -

Pickford

That is an absolutely brilliant side.

Luke Shaw is a nothing player. No big clubs want him.

He’s already at a big club. I assume you mean currently elite (aka Madrid, City etc) and yes, I am shocked none of them would pay the probably 50 million + it would take to get a good left back who has a horrendous injury record. Amazed.

He’s a good player who can’t stay fit. Most national sides don’t have world class footballers in every position, or even top level ones. In fact none of them do.
