He's been a far better CB his entire career, he just believes he's a CDM, he needs to understand that CB is his position and if he wants game time that's where it will be ... he's only 25 still has 7 great years ahead as a CB.

Yeah, Dier as a midfielder is dead. It only ever worked with Dembele, now we need specialists in that area.

Never my favourite player he did well tonight, partly because he didn't have too much to trouble him. I fear for the goal with him in defence against a vibrant, attacking team so don't want him in the starting eleven against Sheffield.

Toby is playing so badly that Dier can probably take his spot if he works hard. Toby is letting scrubs like Tosun score goals against us.

I think Dier was a good midfielder, I liked him there especially when we had a flying RB for him to slip into the 3 at the back. It added tactical flexibility and he could do the job very well and was fairly unique in this regard.

I don't think he is the same player post injuries, he was always a big lump but his body shape has changed, he now looks like a CB. I am now on the Dier at CB bandwagon.

It is telling that every CB other than Toby the ball over the top is looping meaning the opposition defense can recover. Every CB / MF at the club should be using the training to try and copy his technique, its a great weapon

Dier hasn't be a good DM for about 2 seasons with the injuries piling up. He needs to be a CB, and if Foyth is going to be our RB, it only makes sense for Dier to become fourth choice CB.

I will make a prediction.

Foyth will not be our right back in 2 years he will either be a CB or left the club. He will be our RB this year (up until his pace finds him out), and that's a good way to give him game time and improve him as a player.

I wouldn't be surprised if we bought a new RB either in January or next summer. I don't think Foyth is a long term solution. I'm also not sure he's going to be a long term CB in England unless we're playing 3 at the back.

I am hot and cold on Foyth making as a CB in England, I like a lot but it all depends on how he settles down and that will come with experience. I am not making direct comparisons but look at De Ligt at Juve its difficult. (*I don't watch a lot of Juve but he has a fair few Penalties and OGs and the games I have seen make him look shaky)

I think we need a new RB in January but I am not convinced we will get one.

where ever he plays he is limited by his lack of seeing a pass or moving with the ball, like many he can't see that early pass
I like him as a DM helping to protect the CH's , but its that lack of abilitiy to join the attack when we are up against a packed defensive team

Interesting interview that sheds some light on Eric's poor health and invisible man act this year. The second "procedure" over the summer is intriguing...

Eric Dier: ‘People said I was injured but I just kept on falling ill’

He was pretty much the invisible man after his surprise appendicitis operation a year ago.

Personally really pleased to see him back against Red Star as a CB - and imo that role plays to his strengths of reading the game, solid defending and not needing to be athletic rather than a DM where in addition he needs to be able to pass the ball about - where in addition to doing the basics right he seemed to assume the captaincy/organisation of the defensive unit. And whilst Red Star weren't amazing o n the night getting a captain of the defence is really useful - Jan Vertonghen usually does that role but when Jan doesn't play their often seems to be a poorly organised defence. Worth remembering that Southgate made him captain of England a couple of times, the last time just over a year ago.

Early days for him back playing when 100% recovered after injury, so maybe we'll see him also back playing as a DM, but if not think he will be very useful for us this season playing as a CB. Worst case is that it means Alderweireld has to up his game to play.

I may be wrong, but I don't believe it was ever his ambition to be a DM? In fact I seem to remember he stated the contrary and that his future was at centre back? I think it was rather a case of us having two quality CB's (Vert. and Ald.) and not a space to fit him in except for midfield.

In January Dier will have 18 months left on his contract. The club have a big decision to make if they want to avoid another multi million pound player walking away for free in the near future

Good thing our solid fanbase stood behind Dier during this difficult time.

Always worth considering there are human beings and personal lives behind the "footballer"
He didn't really play during that 'difficult time' though and that's reiterated in the article. No one had to be 'stood behind' him as he just wasn't around. It was the 2 years of shit performances and MF impersonations that drove folks wild and that had nothing to do with his medical situation and all to do with his play. And if he's shit again this season it will ahve nothing to do with his medical condition and more to do with that pesky lack of MF talent. Let's hope he can put in some great performances at CB but take your agenda elsewhere.
