Has anyone explained what happens with expiring contracts?

Contracts to 31 May were obviously intended to be contracts to the end of the season. If they are not extended there will be a lot of free agents floating about with a quarter of the season still to play, which is exactly what the transfer window was intended to prevent.

Also, if there is no gap between ending this season and starting next season what happens to the window?

Contracts run to 30 June.

As with all contracts it would take both player and club to agree to extend the end date to a contract under law.

My guess is that UEFA/PL/EFL/The FA will wait until say 1 June to decide if there is any likelihood of completing the season before 'advising' clubs and players of whether they want all contracts extended to finish the season.

My personal guess is that contracts will end on 30 June. Also guess that football will not be deemed to be safe to play until August/September (after players getting a 4-6 week preseason to regain fitness) and as 20/21 season will need to end on time as euros 2020 will be held in summer 2021, that there will be no time to finish 19/20, hence no need to extend player contracts.

I honestly don't understand where there's any confusion with this 30 June contract scenario. This is a red herring.

It's not like Pl clubs are going to be losing big chunks of their playing staff due to them all ending their contracts on the 30th June. They will be losing 1 or 2 maybe 3 or 4 players - and the fact that they've let them run their contract down suggests they aren't exactly "key players" either (in most cases).

Losing 1 or 2 (or even 3 or 4) players, in most cases non vital players, is not going to prevent any PL team from playing 10 games of football.

Whatever happens, the contracts will be binding, unless by some miracle there's an act of force majeure clause inserted into it that stipulates an even such as the one we are experiencing.

It will then be up the the clubs to offer new contracts (short, medium, whatever..) if they want to retain those players and for those players to accept them if they so choose. Or the clubs will just let those players go, and in some cases will be happy to get them off the wage the wage bill.
