5/5 vs mainly dross and still riding our luck at times.

Papering over cracks come to mind.

I do think the EL has been useful for the squad and Ange this season though. It gives us something to distract from the poor league form. I do fancy us to win it as I assume we'll prioritise over the league once we get to the KO phase. There's not one team in there to fear.

Well he hasn't beaten them in the league playing their first team.

That's the question, it's not can Ange beat the best at midweek with them holding back, it's can he beat the best. So far 3 times from 14 by my count.

Ange is lucky to be at this level of football and he knows that if he doesn't want to blow his chance he needs to tow the company line and hope this project pans out. Ange is not likely to be rebuffed by Levy on transfers and say "Who's that guy think he is, I've got plenty of money and I can get another job in the first division of a big league anytime I want, I don't need this".

Levy only moved against Mourinho and Conte when insubordination happened, the results being mediocre wasn't enough.

And you're comparing us with other teams because?

You're assuming that every club in in the exact same circumstances with the exact same players, exact same budget and thus the exact same process - that's now really how it works.

The same swore blind last season that it'll all fall into place for Pochs Chelsea because their underlying stats were consistently near the top of the table despite their league position being 10th or so. And it all sorts itself out in the end.

But now our underlying figures are near the top, they don't matter, it's league position.

Is what it is my friend. You learn to weed out the reactionary lot who piss and moan that we haven't gone the season unbeaten and teams haven't just rolled over for us and learn to respect those who come to their senses after being emotional after said reactions.

They are being willfully obtuse. We are talking about the teams league form because that is what makes and breaks coaches. I mean I give you exhibit A Eric ten Haag winner of both the League and FA cups...

I tell you something my freind, not sure if you were around , I don't use underlying metrics the XG justifications, I just look at the football. I take that temperature from live games often ones I attend. It's not something dictated by the league position or what the concensus is or is not, for example after initial excitement ( I'm a Spurs fan I love it when we win) I started saying I was concerned when we were top under Mourinho. Always want to be wrong but the sustainability of the system become evident to me no matter how hard I wish, whistle loudly or pray.

I don't know if I'd go so far as to say Ange is a yes man, but we've all met the type. He's prickly to reports and those seen as being down the food chain, but is very deferent to those above and makes sure he ticks the needed boxes to make his position with them strong. He's a man of ambition but also one who knows who is buttering his bread.

A manager is only as good as it's players and the circumstances around him, countless examples of good managers failing at one club and succeeding at another because the context is entirely different.

Arteta a manager who finished 8th, 8th then 5th before spending £600m challenging for the league, you're literally just proving the point.

I really thought we would finish 4th last year and be challenging the top 3 this season. Wrong on both counts.

Recently I thought we would beat Palace and kick on. The fact we didn’t turn up at all worries me.
Unless Solanke finds his shooting boots I don’t think we make top 4.
If VDV is out for a while again that’s also going to be a problem as his pace does get us out of jail. Romero switching off as much as he does is not a situation that gives me much hope either.

At this moment in time I’m much more hopeful of cup competitions than the league.

So I think we will finish with less points in the league but get to the EL semis at least. I don’t see us winning the carabao if we play Liverpool at any point.

You said a manager is as good as his players, if one has better players at a club chances are he should do better, but it’s not a given, because the manager has to find balance to make everyone tick and that doesn’t always work out as expected.

Nope, your reading comprehension sucks, I said this:

'A manager is only as good as it's players and the circumstances around him' obviously he needs to make them tick but he has a far better chance if succeding with good players as opposed to crap players, that much is obvious.

I'll make an obvious comparison, do you not think we'd be winning more matches with Vinicius Jr instead of Werner?

As with every other season, the table doesn't really take shape until the Christmas period is over. Games come thick and fast then, with a lot of change once they're over.

We need to get some momentum going now though. We're a long way from "being adrift" at the moment, but we need that momentum going into the Christmas period to keep us in the conversation.

So now we have to rank City alongside all those "poor" teams we beat, because they weren't trying? Because they rotated their team?

I guess we weren't "trying" because we rotated half of ours too then?

They played like they always play, trying to win the game, we just took our chances better than they did.

How fucked do you have to be to make excuses for the team you've beaten, just to shit on the team you're supposed to support?
