Good article, good insight though some take the opportunity to kick you when you're down as you can sense a little glee in the words. But it seems the problems are obvious to all around football.

Too many pianists, no one to carry the piano

Gareth Southgate is not England’s problem. England’s problem is false expectations and false analysis. Spoilt by the Premier League, fans and media expect a spectacle from the national team. But foreign coaches are at work in the Premier league. English footballers are introduced to what is modern by them because there is no training philosophy in England like there is in Spain.

The Southgate debate is reminiscent of Brexit. A country dreams of being the motherland of football. But this mother is as alive as Norman Bates’s.

England are unable to break lines and then are faced with low blocks that are quite hard to penetrate. The connection with Declan Rice has not been easy to find.

The fact that caution has prevailed for as long as Southgate has been national coach is also reflected in the overall poor results of the England team. How grey top players such as Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, Declan Rice and Harry Kane look as they move across the field here in Germany. It cannot be because all four happen to be out of shape at the same time, can it?

A good read. Most raise good and fair points.

Ultimately I think it boils down to two major things:

1 - Gareth Southgate. Deserves all the credit in the world for getting our players enjoying playing for England, which hasn't always been the case. But he's, at best, a Championship level manager that just doesn't have the ability to deal with top class players. Their talent and ability are far beyond his pay grade.

2 - Fitness. Too many of our players came into this tournament on the back of injuries. Kane has clearly been rushed back after his back problem. Saka missed some of Woolwich's final games and often looked sluggish when he did play. Bellingham has been running on empty for a few months and isn't 50% the player he was in the first 4 or 5 months of last season. Stones missed most of the season, and although he's been solid enough, he's not in or close to his best form.

Obviously there are other reasons. Poor team selections. Bad substitutions. Perhaps certain players believing their own hype too much...

That said, I still believe we'll make the semi's and hopefully by then a few of our players will have woken up from their slumber.

Obligatory team news a couple of days before the match...

FA must have some sort of deal with the press, the team news has come out a day or two early pretty much throughout Southgate's era.

They've undoubtedly done a deal.

Southgate has been criticised by the press, but it's all been very mild by their usual standards. Think of the turnip Taylor, Wally with a brolly and various quite vicious insults they've given to England managers past and it's clear that they're treating Southgate with a light touch.

I doubt the deal stands if/when we go out though.

What an arrogant prick he is.

Bloke thinks he’s a martyr, a leader bravely sacrificing himself for the greater good. When, in actual fact, he’s just a shit boring manager that’s stubborn.

The problem he has is that he doesn't have a clue what he is doing from a tactical point of view. It is so obvious he is stuck in the sad doldrums of the mid 90s British football. It's sad but we have to accept he will not change things. Hopefully the unbelievable luck he has had (and has had again) in tournaments pays off.
