Exactly what I am seeing. He is taking the ball from defenders, protecting it and maintaining possession, and then getting it further up the pitch to our attackers. He wasn’t our #10.I feel like I’m still seeing excellence from him: heads-up progressive passing, confidence on the ball, good coverage going back. Whatever deficiencies there are, IMO, have to do with our lack of structure—players not using space well, getting clogged up and narrow (and so limiting ball movement options), runs that aren’t timed well or chosen.
That doesn’t feel to me like it’s on him. It speaks to what‘s happening in training (and, more precisely, what isn’t).
I am also seeing our guys getting the ball in the final third in very tight spaces. In those cases, even with 20 shots, you will at best score one or two goals. Lots of effort and little results.
This is where a player like Bale can make a difference. He comes out to receive the ball in space, which allows him the time and freedom to make good decisions. It also allows his teammates to have space for runs. He also still has class quality.
